Flying Saucer (dub)
Review: This release, which is part of the label's 20th anniversary celebrations, marks a significant milestone for Sushitech, a long-established label that deals in quality dub, tech and deep house. It offers a special glimpse into Housey Doingz, a highly influential collective from the London scene who pioneered early underground sounds. The exclusive 10x10" series showcases remastered tracks and rare, previously unreleased material from their legendary Strange Weather DAT archives. The first instalment features a remastered version of the iconic 'Flying Saucer,' a tune that has been a staple at Fabric over the years, plus an unreleased dub version that has never been heard before. Crucial.

Jesse Merlin - "Do The Umm"
Review: The hardcore house heads at Dungeon Meat have assembled another funky slab of waxy deliciousness to tuck into and this time it's a various artists affair. Mance serves up the starter, 'In A World Of,' which is rock solid cut with a physical low end but infused with real soul warmth. Timmy P's 'Utter Filth' is another muscular house workout with an elastic bassline and trippy lead. Pimp C's 'Where My Bitches' is a sleazy and ghetto-tinged pumper and Jesse Merlin brings some warped low ends and twitchy synth menace to the prowling rhythms of closer 'Do The Umm'. Essential tackle.

Review: Earl Jeffers is no stranger to crafting effective, big-hearted sounds. He's got plenty of them dropping in the early part of 2025 too, and all of them are slightly different but equally effective. This latest drop on the Melange Archives label was originally released back in 2013 and starts with 'Monster (feat Kofi Tarris)' which is raw-as-you-like house music at a slow and steady pace but with such energy in the chords and funky guitars that it will blow up any club. 'Thunder & Lightning (feat TOG)' lands a little more heavy. There is garage swing in the drums and plenty of expression in the vocal stabs. Two bombs, for sure.

Review: Having spent the formative years of his career delivering dusty deep house cuts and hazy techno jams as Samuel, Sam Smith has really hit his stride since donning the Ploy alias at the tail end of the last decade. Here he takes time out from releasing on his own Deaf Test imprint and pal Batu’s Timedance outlet to deliver his first outing on Ryan Elliot’s Faith Beat imprint. He begins in full-throttle, UKG-influenced mode on ‘Flirt’ – all warped bass, skippy drums and glassy-eyed musical motifs – before opting for a more bumpin’, sample-heavy sound on the sweat-soaked joy of ‘Woman (Thank You)’. Over on the flip, Smith charges between the big room, Junior Vasquez-influenced tribal house heaviness of ‘Love Song’, the shoulder-swinging UKG flex of ‘I Need You’, and the immersive dark house psychedelia of ‘Prayer Hands’.

Review: That man Burnski is back like he is seemingly every single week with yet more on-point new beats. He assumes his Instinct alias for another superb album of club-ready tech, minimal, garage and house concoctions that do everything right. Whether nodding to the old school with big piano joy ('Want You'), going for the late night afters ('Atmosphere), keeping it deep ('Right Time') or rewiring your brain with manic nu-jungle workouts ('Dreaming'), these are expertly designed tracks that are guaranteed to make an impact all summer and beyond. For the record, the gun finger synths and shuffling low-end hustle of 'Go' might be our favourite amongst many.

What I Need
Review: New York's Paradise Garage always had a reputation for championing "knocky" sounds, with its staple genre, garage house, and its auditory coeval, speed garage, co-emphasising a swiftly swung open-and-close hi-hat pattern. But Berlin native Nat Wendrell, now carrying the formative 4x4 garage torch, proves that garage house swing can sound lacklustre even in Paradise: compared even to those earliest releases, these are devilishly swung tunes. The 'Embrasse' EP is far "knockier" and more swung than most other garage house releases that came before it, where each perc and one-shot is put in its draggiest, latest possible rhythmic place. 'What I Need', meanwhile, stands out here as the Strictly Rhythm DX7 organiser of choice, with a deeply nostalgic "yeah-yeah" acting as a focal vocal.

Bass
Review: Proper scratch-itching 12" business via Portuguese minimal outfit Cloudbeats. Velvet Velour (Liam Dodds) serves as visiting dance tutor, topping up a fortuitous four years so far under the moniker, and buoyed by such disc dissenters as Butter Side Up, Sonido Chido and Nuances De Nuit. 'Tempo' is a record-scratching, hi speed garage satisfier, the title track for which flaunts a rather brave early tempo slowdown to die for. As the record goes on we hear various love bugging, paralinguistic vocal sounds - hums, breaths, giggles, "uh-huh" and"yes" samples - as though to mirror what we were already thinking about the record. We hear extra convective sound bubbles blown on the B1 'What Is That?', locking down a bathtime garage sound universe that is entirely its own.

The Big Three
Sometimes I Wish
Review: Will & Batty touch down on the fourth instalment from this skyward-facing label with four slick and sunny rollers that practically demand a rooftop setting. 'May We Come In' is a velvety warm-upisoft pads and jazzy chords inviting us into the duo's breezy world with ease. 'Bubblin' brings a touch more bite with its skipping drums and slippery bassline keeping dancers light on their toes. On the flip, 'The Big Three' leans into bounce and sparkle with classic West London swing while 'Sometimes I Wish' closes things out on a sweeter note, doused in soul and longing but never losing that effortless glide. You can hear how much fun these two are having and it isn't overworked, chin-strokey deep house but something looser and more alive. Bright, tactile and perfectly timed for open windows and warm evenings, this one locks in the label's feel-good ethos with ease.

Stick To What You Know
Ri Thum
Review: You're hardly going to believe this, but Ebullience is yet another new label from Burnski. The tireless Brit already heads up the likes of Instinct, Pilot and Constant Sound and makes music under various guises for all of them as well as recruiting plenty of interesting and like-minded producers for their own releases. This one kicks off with Bedfordshire's Danny Snowden, who brings the vibes across four cuts of minimal, large and tech. 'Sky Is The Limit' is a feel-good and sunny cruiser, 'It's Not Over' has 90s soul and depth and 'Stick To What You Know' comes with retro-future basslines and big pianos. 'Ri Thum' shuts down with some timeless US garage that is always going to get the 'floor going.
